Remember Why You Started

Working for yourself is hard. Running your own business is hard. Running your own blog is hard. It is so easy to get distracted when you are constantly surrounded by other creative people, organisations and competitors. It is at times like this that you need to remember why you started.

Growing your business is like running a race. We start off strong, confident. We are sure of ourselves, and we know why we are running this race.

Then somewhere around the halfway mark, we start to get tired. We start to see everyone else running the race all around us. Some are ahead, some are behind, and there will always be that one person that seems to be right next to you. Always. If you turn left, they turn left, if you turn right, they turn right.

It can all be so distracting.

Some people drop out of the running. They realise that they might be in over their heads. Or else they realise that the race they are running is not the right race for them. And always remember, life happens to all of us. Sometimes we have to stop because life has led us in a different direction.

It is at this point that we need to dig deep.

We need to decide if we want to keep running this race. And then we start to ask ourselves questions:

Can we keep running?

Do we want to keep running?

Maybe we should walk for a bit, take a breather. Catch our breath.

Do we really want to run THIS race?

Is this the road we thought you would be running down?

Perhaps the most important question of all …

Do you remember why you started this race?

We all need a little bit of perspective sometimes. There is only one race, your race. Your race is different to everyone else’s because it is YOUR race.

If you choose to carry on …

That’s the point where you need to start running again.

Focus.

Focus on what you want to achieve. And decide how to get there.

Drop the dead weight, and if you need it, ask for help. There is no shame in asking for help.

Maybe all you need is some new shoes. Don’t we all like a new pair of shoes sometimes?

After all, a change is as good as a holiday.
